Camping at Wappapello Lake
For campers, Wappapello Lake offers a range of accommodations from primitive sites to full hookups, catering to both tent campers and those with RVs. Imagine waking up to the sounds of nature, surrounded by amenities like electric hookups, clean showers, and convenient boat mooring areas—perfect for families seeking a comfortable retreat in the wilderness.
There are many campgrounds to choose from including privately-owned resorts, and recreation areas managed by government agencies.
Set up camp at the Greenville Recreation Area, located at the north end of the lake along the St. Francis River. This historical site is where Old Greenville City was called home until floods forced the community to relocate. You can see historical building foundations and old streets while taking a stroll down the Memory Lane Trail.
Our favorite place to camp at Wappapello Lake is People’s Creek Lower Recreation Area. Shaded by towering trees, this campground sits along the lakeshore where you can launch your boat, kayak or swim your day away at the expansive sandy beach. Peoples Creek Recreation Area is also a starting point along the 3-mile, asphalt-surfaced Lake View Trail.

Trails, Wildlife, and Sandy Beaches

Traverse the shorter Pine Ridge Trail for a peaceful stroll, or challenge yourself with five miles of rugged paths on the Johnson Tract Trail, all while soaking in panoramic views of the lake and its vibrant wildlife. There’s even a 31-mile section of the Ozark Trail that cuts through the area.
Lake Wappapello State Park has even more trails to connect you to nature. Take a stroll through Civil War-era history on the 2.6-mile Allison Cemetery Trail. For the adventurer, the 12.75-mile Lake Wappapello Trail crosses rugged Ozark terrain, giving hikers, bikers, and horseback riders a challenging experience with magnificent views.
